this honestly tugged my heart watching this, all my support goes out to the band & his loved ones.
R.I.P Paul Gray.
Very sad, seeing these guys so broken up. Fear not: he, Peter Steele, and Dio will join forces to form the world’s most AWESOME BAND. Complete with two bassists. It’s gonna be that friggin’ sweet.
RIP Paul, and a world of thanks to both him and Slipknot. The music lives on.
This is actually a really difficult video to watch, for anyone that’s in a band or plays music with people they care about. Any speculated turmoil aside, this shows how tight knit Slipknot really is. 2010 is already such a goddamn tragic year for metal. RIP Paul Gray, the repercussions of your untimely death are being felt by everyone in the metal world.
Oh god, that was tough. I can’t imagine what the guys in Slipknot, Paul’s family, wife and kids feel right now. It was shocking when i first heard about it, i thought it was just a rumor but when ozzy osbourne, all shall perish, etc started updating their status on Facebook saying that he will be missed. My heart just dropped. He will be missed and i hope Slipknot will continue on. RIP Paul Gray.
summer bummer
Not a fan by any means but I feel for the guys. That bands been together long enough & done enough that you can’t help but understand how tight-knit and family-like they really were.
quite unfortunate, yet another addition to an otherwise sad month for metal.
Truly sad when you see how they are taking it, half of them couldn’t even bring themselves to speak.
I agree with ‘VeganBassist’, I don’t think 9 dudes can last as a band for 4+ albums and countless tours without truly being a family. whether you love or hate Slipknot (love ‘em myself), you can’t deny the impact they’ve had on metal, good ol’ rock’n'roll theatrics, and just the entire music scene in general. They’ve given us four absolutely stellar albums (so far… with hopefully many more to come) and Paul lives on through the amazing music he had a part in creating. And as an original founding member of the band, I think he would want his fellow bandmates to soldier on as Slipknot atleast a little while longer… for him, for themselves, for us fans, and for the music. So why not rock out to a little Slipknot today, in honor of Paul. R.I.P.
Seriously, this sucks. Apart from my own selfishness of wanting the band to stay together, I send out my prayers to Slipknot and Paul’s wife. I will never forget hearing their first album (self-titled). I was blown away and it became very influential to my musical career when I was a teen. R.I.P. Paul! Thank you for everything!
man thats sad
I’ll admit I started choking up on this one.
Slipknot was a LARGE gateway band for me. You have to understand.. when Slipknot first came around, I was barely scratching the surface of metal. In fact, when I first heard Slipknot, I hated it.. it was too “crazy”. I proceeded to listen to Mudvayne, Godsmack, Limp Bizkit and Korn. My mom bought me Iowa by mistake and I’m the type to put a lot of energy into trying to like something, especially if it was bought for me. To summarize, I became obsessed with slipknot and from there ventured out to increasingly heavier music. I also listen to rap, some folk, all metals, soft rock, acoustic music.
I give props to slipknot for where I’m at now today, with music.
On that note.. I feel very emotionally touched by this.
I think they should do a new album. A Debut + Iowa-type album. A really fucking heavy album
I’m going to try and refrain from being a dick.Slipknot to me always rode on the co-tails of KoRn and Deftones, at least I first thought. After many many listens of their first album and Iowa back in the day, I started to see the edge and fierceness these fukkers brought! I remember back in early 2000 when my friend saw an interview with this band, they said they listened to all different kinds of music such as celine dion, sarah machlaclan, etc. I thought that was cool. Aside from me thinking corey taylor is a wannabe,poser,$ellout.. he has a good voice. Paul Gray seemed like a down to earth and really sincere individual, and a good friend to those he came across. RIP Paul.
That’s one big fucking hole that’s been torn out of Slipknot……ain’t no Band Aid big enough to fix that for now……let’s see what the next few years hold…..RIP PG
This is awful! Growing up, Slipknot became such an influence to me when I was a teen. I remember hearing their self-titled album and being blown away. Such brutalness, such passion, such emotion. They helped develop me into a musician and I am forever grateful. If it weren’t for Paul, they wouldn’t have existed. Thank you Paul! Thank you Slipknot. Bless you and your family Paul. R.I.P.
i remember the first time i ever heard slipknot. it was at like 2am on some random metal radio show. they played the “spit it out” demo — and after hearing that song… this was probably in 1998, before the 1999 s/t album release came out. i got on the internet and tried to find this song, something about this band, and i could find nothing… they were nobodies and the time — but i knew that metal was heading in a new direction, and i was excited about that. a few months later, they blew up. rightly so, because at the time nobody was doing what they were doing. even the whole mask thing was novel at the time. so whether you love them or hate them today, i think pretty much everyone can agree that without slipknot, metal would not have made the comeback it did in the late 90′s/early 2000′s. at that time, it was a dying scene. they paved the way for the next decade of music. you’ve gotta respect that regardless what your opinion of them or their music is. no matter the cause of death (i think we all know anyway), respect to the band and to Paul, R.I.P.
@NdR23
wannabe = someone who wishes to attain or to be something they’re not. Corey Taylor does not fit that category. Unlike you, he could sing a song and someone would give a shit.
poser = someone who places themselves in a position. I imagine his position in life is probably filled with more success stories and incredible experiences than you could dream of.
sell out = open to interpretation, and really thrown around far to often as an insult when in fact it is not. the music industry is just as it says.. an industry. if a person wants to express themselves through music, as humankind has since the dawn of time, they do so as an instinct. but, if a person (or persons) makes a conscious decision to utilize and hone their talents in order to make music that other people will pay you to perform (chant leaders of tribes make stipends at weddings, funerals etc etc..) then there is no difference between being a professional musician and say.. a dentist or mechanic. no matter your opinion, he’s been doing a JOB. another way to look at the word sellout is “sell-out” as in selling out arenas, selling out of merchandise, selling out of released copies of a record. see.. you sling a compliment disguised as an insult without thinking it through.
p.s. also, i think you meant “coat tails”. and bro… they most certainly did no such thing.
[/RANT]
Corey Taylor is boring.
@ 9 Ounce Prime
Glad i could pick at your scab a lil’ bit, bro.I find it funny how someone would throw such a tantrum over a silly fuckin’ blog post.
This really tugs at you hard, they are family and I love Slipknot so much, it won’t be the same if they stay together.
and
@ 9 Ounce Prime and NdR23
Perhaps you should research your words first, it’s Poseur, not Poser.
Poser is simply “Someone who poses” lol.
@ Kydox
LOL I stand corrected.
1. not a tantrum. a rant.
2. i’m not french.
poser definition
n.
someone who pretends to belong to a group only by affecting the attributes of the group. (See also mod poser.) : What’s he doing here? He’s just a poser, looking for dates.
ref; dictionary.com
nice try, though.
p.s. read it again Kydox. I wrote that he put himself in a position.
My friends stoner/grind band is called Poser Disposer, check them out on myspace. They make killer merch.
@NdR223 How on earth did Slipknot ride the coat tails of deftones and korn? That statement makes absolutely no sense but thanks for playing!
Slipknot, again, love em or hate em, has become on of the biggest acts on the planet on their own terms. For some people, that band is almost like a way of life. Find me a band in the last ten years that has impacted music and the culture of metal the way that slipknot has. Wanna talk sellout? Well, you hit the nail on the head with korn. Corey Taylor never sold out. I don’t even see how you could make a statement like that. R.I.P. Paul Gray.
Well the reason I made that comment is because if you listen to the first slipknot album, alot of the vocals sound very similar to jonathan davis.(Remember that’s only an opinion). As for the riding of the coat-tails(thank you 9 ounce prime), I say that because of the time most of the nu metal bands came out such as static x,machine head, cold, staind, etc. was 1999 roughly. 5 years after Korn released their self titled debut. Most of those bands were known for destroying the genre(eventhough some did have some good shit). As for my comment on Corey being a sellout, you’re right korn sold out a long time ago, in fact I’ll even retract the statement I made about Corey Taylor, he’s a good vocalist but a part of me still sees the mask thing as creative and pretty badass, and a marketing gimmick to grab attention(maybe).
So sad.
Damn. I really feel bad for these dudes. I know exactly how they feel. One of my guitarists passed away some years back and it was hard to continue despite some label attention we had. We called it quits shortly after and scrapped the rock star dream. I hope these dudes continue do what they do. R.I.P. Paul Gray.
To anyone who thinks that slipknot rode the coat tails of the deftones and korn, your completely full of shit. Every band has influences your retards of course you might find some similarities come on quit trying to find shit to bitch about when it comes to talented artists. And how the fuck is corey taylor a sellout? Holy hell why do people always bitch about a talented artist who wants to move into other areas? Tom Morello got heckled because he wanted to do something other than bitch about the government all the time(which i dont blame him at all he made his point and hes an ARTIST he goes wherever his creative bone takes him). Corey has made his point with slipknot, stone sour is just another side of him that he wants to share, fucking get over yourselves and show some fucking respect for the greats and lets face it hes becoming one of them.
