Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was found dead at 10:50am this morning at a hotel in Urbandale, Iowa. The police are reporting that no evidence of foul play was found, but an investigation into his death is ongoing. More on that can be found over at the desmoinesregister.com.

Cocaine is a hella of a drug.
It’s a little early to start writing this off as just another cautionary tale of what happens when you do drugs. Give the process a chance to catch up with your assumptions, then we can write the epitaph. On another note, I’ve always wondered what would happen to Slipknot if one member, for whatever reason, was no longer a part of the band. They seem so tight-knit, it’s hard to imagine anyone new coming in. I guess time will tell if this marks the end of Slipknot.
I’d hate to blame this on drugs without knowing the whole story, regardless it is sad whenever we lose another metalhead.

They wont go on without him. He started the band in ’95, and wrote most of their material since the beginning. Slipknot always said they would end the band even if one member left the band…this guy didnt leave..he died. This is prolly the end of Slipknot. shitty news. Great live band next to PanterA.

o please yall are kiding yourselfs of course they will get a new basist. they will be in deep mormning for a while but they will get a new man. maybe departure by death is the only way they can loose a member and go on. if he had of left for creative differences then maybe it would end slipknot but this will only make them stronger.
Anyone writing this off as non-drug related needs to step back and look at the big picture – he’s on record as battling the drug demons that plague so many talented people.
Speed balls, pills, cocaine…He’s on record having done them all. He was arrested with syringes, weed and coke in his car a few years back (2003) after wrecking and almost killing a woman and her daughter…

@ Sam Eagle – I was certainly expecting the hotel to look worse, as though a Sex Pistol may have died in it or something. That just looks like a normal hotel.
I stand corrected. Upon further investigation, the Towneplace Suites is actually a part of the Marriott family and the worst review I found was a 3/5 and even then, they wrote they’d be willing to give the place another shot.
From the outside, the hotel looks very average at best. It gives off more of an apartment complex look than a hotel look, I thought.
From the other photo I’ve seen (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/reviewpics/grayhotel1.jpg), it doesn’t look like he had much with him in there; some clothes…the large clear bag almost looks like garbage maybe…and his bass.
Either way, it’s unfortunate that his choices during his life ultimately cost him his life…and of course, making a bad situation worse is the fact his wife is pregnant with their first child.

@Surly, speaking of hotels…My parents and younger brothers house was damaged severely last week in a city related water back up, and they’ve been living out of a hotel (insurance covers everything) for the past 2 weeks now. It’s pretty awesome because anytime I want a really amazing dinner, I can just swing by and eat with them at the great restaurant in the hotel. Gotta love Insurance coming through.
