Chino Moreno has some spoken with Rollingstone.com about the bands forthcoming new album and more. Moreno revealed that sixteen songs for the effort have been written thus far with producer Matt Hyde (Slayer, Porno For Pyros) overseeing the sessions. A potential September/October release date is being eyed. Moreno said of the writing process:

“The songs are amazing, and we wrote them in a really cool way. We had all of us in a room together with one person expressing an idea and another person jumping on it. The songs are really built as a collective. We have five guys who have almost completely different takes on music, so when it works, it works great.”

In regards to the direction of the material, he offered:

“I think it’s a little more of a heady record. I feel like we’ve gone into the songs and really dissected them. If something sounded a little straight, we took a left turn and made things a little screwy. We just tried something completely opposite, not to sabotage it, but to challenge ourselves and try new things that we haven’t done in the past. It definitely feels like we’ve taken a step from our last record. But it’s definitely a Deftones record, and it has all the elements that make us who we are. We’re not going out there to change anything, other than just thinking outside the box.”

If all goes according to plan, the group will be done tracking the effort by the end of the month. Furthermore, Moreno stated that there are presently not guest appearances lined up, though that could change.

Moreno also touched on the status of his other projects, including Team Sleep‘s completed sophomore album and Crosses (†††)‘ temporary hiatus. You can read about that over at Rollingstone.com. Late last week a tease of new music from the Deftones ongoing recording sessions surfaced, check that out here.
