The Word Alive: "It Is Sad To See How Divided The Heavy Music World Is These Days"

The Word Alive recently posted a “death metal freestyle” video (see below) that got them a bit of heat due to a comment made that was apparently taken out of context. Last night (November 01st) the band posted the following:

“It is sad to see how divided the heavy music world is these days. All of you elitists should realize your hate accomplishes nothing, and the bands you love often times are great friends with the ones you hate the most.

Learn to be open minded, and understand that our side of music could be so much more than what it is if everyone spent half as much time promoting a band they loved instead of wasting their time hating.

To those of you who love the music and respect the artists, you guys are the backbone of what keeps heavy music alive. Thank you!”

Speaking directly to a fan on the post, the band directly commented on the video itself to a fan, saying:

“There are a lot of really positive and unfortunately really negative comments. The only one I personally will respond to is about the video we posted and my comment that has been taken out of context. We love deathcore/deathmetal. We play it at practice because it is fun, we weren’t making fun of it. We were just having fun, you know, what you’re supposed to do with your best friends while playing music!

The comment “it takes no talent to play this” or whatever the direct quote is, was meant for the exact song we were playing. Mostly because of the quality, it sounded horrible in the video and we were just free styling. I’m sure if you soloed out what we were all doing it would have been a bunch of random things haha. Just clearing that up.

The only thing I made fun of was people getting so butthurt over whether it was deathcore or death metal. It was heavy and at the end of the day 90% of the world (or more) views any music with screaming all the same. Trying to make up and classify more and more genres just separates this world and creates more barriers. Hence, why I called it “heavy music”.”
