Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett recently spoke with Theverge.com about the groups new film “Metallica Through The Never“, their next album and more. Perhaps the most interesting moment of the chat came about when he was asked if fan reactions ever play a role in deciding what the band will do next.  The divisive reception of “Lulu“—their much maligned collaborative project with Lou Reed—was of course brought up, to which Hammett replied:

“No, because we’re doing it for ourselves, man. Lulu is a really good example. I think that Lulu is some of the best stuff we’ve done. I mean the song “Junior Dad” moves me to tears, and working with Lou Reed was such a cool, unique, and special thing for us. Maybe it’s not for everyone. Maybe it’s a challenge for our fans, but for us — Lars, James, Rob, and myself — we loved doing it and it was such a great experience. We look back at it very positively.”

In regards to the next Metallica album Hammett said the band plan to truly focus on it at the beginning of next year and have yet to decide on a producer.
