A newly made comment on social media by Slipknot guitarist Jim Root has shared some more insight into the masked metal marauders’ approach with their forthcoming eighth studio album. Set to serve as their first offering through their newly founded (sic)est Records label, recording sessions for that outing have been underway in recent weeks.
Today (September 28th), Root showed off some of his rig in the below post, leading a fan to comment:
“please come up with Slayer/Slipknot evil, scary,disgusting, groove… intros…..breakdowns…let this latest Slipknot be your Black Album. ( How?) By not accepting anything but the absolute sic kest, grossest, heaviest riffs on thia green earth. Let all your years culminate to this point..sharpen it into a weapon..and write thw heaviest riffs you’ve ever done. Don’t do all fast shit…you are Slipknot..you are not Thrash metal. The groove is what got Slipknot here. The groove with scary, disgusting…and that dangerous feeling that has been missing. ??? May your riffs flow through”
Root directly replied to the fan, stating:
“thank you! I very important thing for us at this time is to not “repeat” ourselves. It’s gonna hurt some feelings. We’re really experimenting with different approaches… don’t expect another “Iowa” or “self titled” record. We’ve been there. The vibe feels honest and true to me. It’s uneasy and reminds me of recording in the earlier days. I’m not saying that means it will translate to the type of music we’re creating or the sound/production of it. The early records had the vibe. You can’t miss that with Ross.
But they always sounded “LoFi” to me. And some of the later records felt/sounded “over produced” … like. Too many layers of guitar etc. we don’t need that. Me and mick. L and R and then a few 3rd tracks and maybe solos. That’s it. And of the 16 amps I vetted to record with. Matt and I chose the most pissed off sounding one. Not necessarily the “best” sounding one. The most exciting sounding… liveliest etc. we did track on the floor live with Eloy. We hadn’t done that in a long time for various reasons. Everything is analog and played. All the pieces that need to be there are there.”
The Matt he speaks of is producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More, Mushroomhead), who has been overseeing the sessions for that album and also worked with the band on their recent standalone single “Arsenal“. A 2027 release is expected for Slipknot‘s next record, with the band having unveiled a massive 2027 stadium tour for it this morning.
