SLEEP CLUB will be heading out on a Southeastern U.S. tour next month. That trek will see the shoegaze outfit out in support of their upcoming debut album “Dweller“, which they’ve yet to specify an exact release date for. That uncertainty in part stems from the recent struggles the band have been having with Spotify in regards to their latest musical output.
The group released their latest single, “Weight Of Ease” from that record late last month, with the song seemingly incorrectly being flagged by Spotify for AI usage. It’s a problem the group have previously run into, with their entire catalog previously incorrectly being flagged by Spotify‘s internal systems, before eventually being resolved by the digital service provider.
The band’s nucleus Matt Jones said of that situation last week:
“SPOTIFY IS ONCE AGAIN FLAGGING OUR MUSIC AS EITHER GENERATED” OR “VIOLATING TERMS OF USE”
For the 2nd time in two releases, our newest single “Weight of Ease” has been flagged by Spotify’s Al driven internal system as “ineligible for recommendation”. The first week of this single was the biggest we have ever had. A week after launch, the song appears to have been flagged, and we’ve (once again) seen all algorithmic support vanish.
Algorithmic support is things things like “radio”, “personalized mixes”, “release radar”,”discover weekly”, etc. These outlets make up roughly 50-70% of the average artists total stream volume. When they vanish, it’s much harder to recoup the cost I sink into recording, gear, time not working my day jobs, etc. Particularly before we go on tour, which is very expensive, this is a hard pill to swallow.
The good news is that this is an issue that Spotify has previously addressed and fixed. The last time this happened, it was the entirety of our catalog. This time, it’s just “Weight of Ease“. It took roughly 5 weeks to get our catalog “eligible for recomendation” again. I anticipate roughly the same wait here.
As it stands, I have to wait to release the final single of the album, “Bruiser“, until this is all settled. It’s ironic that this album, which is about the intrusion of Al into every aspects of our lives, keeps getting flagged by Al systems incorrectly. It’d be more humorous if these things didn’t affect our debut album in such a way. The other good news is that given the now very slow rollout of this album, I’ve had plenty of time to really

The band have since commented on theprp’s social media post about the situation:
“Hey guys! Weve since learned that the reason our catalog was first flagged was because our name “sleep club” had the word “sleep” in it, which spotifys system decided was too similiar to the names of their “sleep” playlists. We do not yet know why the current single is ineligible for algorithmic support. Spotify artists support has been unhelpful and unclear about why our music may have been flagged this time and at this point have not offered any solutions.”
