Alternative metal outfit Islander may have plans to cover Deftones‘ early 2000s single “Back To School (Mini Maggit)” amid their next round of touring. Yesterday, June 27th, Islander posted the below video tease of a live rendition of that track, which appears to have been filmed in their rehearsal spot.
Islander said alongside the below video, “If their not gonna play it, we figured someone should.” While “Back To School (Mini Maggit)” is a fan-favorite from Deftones‘ game-changing 2000 album “White Pony“, it was last played by the Sacramento natives back in 2022.
It’s also a song that has a complicated history for Deftones, having essentially been written at their then label’s request to make a single more marketable to the trends at the time. Vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno admitted that the band were pressured into coming up with the track, and quickly threw it together to essentially thumb their nose at their label. However, as it turned out, their label loved it and went on to tack it on to subsequent re-releases of “White Pony“, ruffling the feathers of the band who felt it disrupted their initial vision for “White Pony“. Moreno himself reflected on the song back in 2020, stating, “[The label] got it, and they loved it. I thought it was so-so.”
Islander have numerous chances to insert this track into their set over the summer, as they have the following string of shows booked.
