Bass icon Les Claypool began his run of ‘Claypool Gold‘ marathon shows last night, May 20th, performing with three of his bands at the Reno Events Centre in Reno, NV. Those concerts see him front and center for Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium and his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade each night.
The aforementioned kickoff date of that run served up a few live debuts from the latest Primus EP “A Handful Of Nuggs” and The Claypool Lennon Delirium‘s new album “The Great Parrot-Ox And The Golden Egg Of Empathy“. It also saw the live return of Primus‘ “Hellbound 17 1/2 (Theme From)“. That “Tales From The Punchbowl” track got its first performance since October of 2012 at the show.
Though thus far with a bit less fluidity, the structure of the night in a way recalled Primus‘ touring with Maynard James Keenan‘s ‘Sessanta‘ touring in recent years. Those treks saw Keenan also fronting more than one of his bands each night. As for last night’s setlist, it ran as follows:
Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade:
“Up On The Roof“
“Lust Stings“
“David Makalaster“
“Precipitation“
“D’s Diner“
The Claypool Lennon Delirium:
“South Of Reality“
“Blood And Rockets: Movement l, Saga Of Jack Parsons“
“The Golden Egg Of Empathy” (live debut)
“Troll Bait” (live debut)
“WAP (What a Predicament)” (live debut)
“Astronomy Domine” (Pink Floyd cover)
Primus:
“Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers“
“Last Salmon Man“
“American Life“
“The Ol’ Grizz“
“Hellbound 17 1/2 (Theme From)” (first time since 2012)
“Bob’s Party Time Lounge“
“Shake Hands With Beef“
“Welcome To This World“
“My Name Is Mud“
“Jerry Was A Race Car Driver“
Encore:
“Soutbound Pachyderm” (with members of all three bands)
