Today, May 12th, saw the debut of ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill‘ on streaming platform Disney+. This hyperviolent new entry in the Marvel cinematic universe finds Jon Bernthal back in the title role, continuing his saga as Frank Castle/The Punisher that has been unfolding across his own streaming series and the various cameos he’s made in other works in the MCU.
We’re getting into spoiler territory when it comes to needle drops featured in this roughly hour long featurette, so if you want to go in fresh, you can move on now. Two notable metal songs were featured within this film, including an opening scene soundtracked by Danzig‘s 1988 anthem “Mother“. In a fitting nod to the cinematic history of ‘The Punisher‘, a particularly gruesome fight scene is soundtracked by “I Will Be Heard“, the lead single from Hatebreed‘s 2002 major label debut “Perseverance“.
While by not an official entry in MCU canon, the soundtrack to the 2008 film ‘Punisher: War Zone‘ was littered with heavy metal tracks, that in addition to the likes of Slayer, Slipknot, Rob Zombie and more, included Hatebreed‘s cover of Sepultura‘s “Refuse / Resist“, making this latest pairing a clever nod back.
