Ghost‘s surprise hit single “Mary On A Cross” has now crossed the threshold into platinum status in the United Kingdom. That song first arrived on the “Seven Inches Of Satanic Panic” EP in 2019, which in the occult rock band’s cannon, was originally recorded back in the 1960s.

Admittedly, he song didn’t make all that much impact upon it its initial release. However, after being altered in tempo and reverb by a fan, it went viral on TikTok, leading to it becoming their first-ever platinum single in the United States back in 2023. This past November saw the band double that success, with the song securing 2x multi-platinum status in the United States, certifying 2,000,000 units of the song being shifted.

Now, as of December 19th, that track has gone platinum in the United Kingdom, signifying 600,000 units of the song being shifted in the UK since its release. This single also marks the first time Ghost have landed a platinum award in the UK. It first went silver (200,000) in the UK in February of 2024 and then gold (400,000) in June of 2024.

You can read more about the tale behind “Mary On A Cross” and its unplanned success in this past piece, which found Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge labeling it as, “the biggest song of my career.”
