Despite direct opposition from the family and estates of Static-X vocalist/guitarist Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray, Matt Zane is forging ahead with production of his documentary on the last seven years of the lives of the late couple. Zane, known for fronting Society 1 as well as his time in the adult film industry and more, announced the project this fall.

He noted that he had begun filming for it before the couple’s respective deaths, though full-fledged plans for it never transpired due to the November 01st, 2014 death of Wayne from a fatal mixture of prescription drugs and alcohol. Wray would later take her own life in January of 2016.

Yesterday, December 10th, the families and estates of Wayne and Tera issued this statement, outlining their strong opposition to the project, while also noting that, ‘any attempt to exploit their unauthorized likeness will be met with the appropriate legal response.’

Zane also claimed to be in possession of an “EP’s worth of material” that he recorded with Wayne for a movie starring Wray that never got released. He mentioned that he intended to revisit and finish those songs with assistance from AI technology. The family of Static and Wray also strenuously objected to those plans as well in their aforementioned statement.

Alongside today’s (December 11th) launch of the crowdfunding campaign for the film over at Indiegogo, Zane offered:

Wayne Static and Tera Wray asked me to create this about their life.

I am an award winning director with hundreds of music videos to my name as well as two documentaries. Some people I have worked with in the past are Zakk Wylde, John 5, DMC and many more.

My hope is that this project will present Wayne and Tera‘s relationship in a way that they wanted the world to see them.

The funds will be used to provide filming and editing costs. The goal is to complete the project within a year’s time.

There are some great perks and you will be directly responsible for helping Wayne and Tera‘s vision become a reality.”

In a separate video announcing the campaign, Zane outlined the project, while also showcasing a brief clip of an unreleased song involving Wayne titled “I Watch“. He said in that video [transcribed by theprp.com]:

“My name is Matt Zane and it is my goal with your help to complete a documentary that Wayne Static and Tera Wray asked me to film about their life.

Wayne hired me for every film related project after he left Static-X, including the ‘Pighammer‘ promo. The ‘Assassins Of Youth‘ video, and his last music video, ‘Noise Revolution‘”‘ with DMC. We were never able to complete the project in 2014 due to funding, but we did have plans to continue filming at a later time.

Unfortunately, that never happened due to Wayne‘s untimely passing. But now, with your help, Wayne and Tera‘s story can finally be told. I knew Wayne for 15 years and actually met and worked with his wife, Tera, before they were married.

We became close over the course of their seven-year relationship. And I was with them during pivotal moments, which gives me the ability to provide a unique perspective of their lives. I also have never before seen footage that will be included in a documentary for the first time.

Another exciting aspect of this project is that I worked on music with Wayne that is unreleased that will be featured within the film in some form. Please join me on this journey, creating a documentary for my friends Wayne and Tera, presenting their life in a way that they would have wanted to be seen: as themselves, madly in love, obsessed with each other in a wild world that they created. I thank everyone for their support and I’m looking forward to getting started on this amazing and exciting new project.”
