20 years ago today (November 22nd) System Of A Down released what unwittingly would become their final studio album, “Mezmerize“. In honor of that milestone, the chart-topping Armenian-American nü-metallers have looked back at that closing chapter of the “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize” saga with a brief video retrospective shared on their social media.
Despite continued fan demand for a follow-up to the aforementioned album, the 2x platinum “Mezmerize” seems destined to serve as the capstone for the band’s album cycle era. For well over a decade now, an internal rift on the songwriting and business side of the band has largely prevented them from returning to the studio to deliver a follow-up.
The fatigue of that disagreement has also seen several members of the band distance themselves from the idea of attempting to hammer out a new body of work as well, with primary songwriter, guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan having previously expressed their trepidation at the prospect.
