Primus Launch Official Web Series Detailing Their Hunt For A New Drummer

Alternative metal weirdos Primus have now rolled out a full-fledged web series documenting their recent successful hunt for a new drummer. Facing the void left by last fall’s departure of Tim “Herb” Alexander, the group launched an open audition process. Some 6200 musicians took their shot at the role, with this series chronicling those who made it to the final stage of auditioning with the band live. An initial series of clips briefly documented that process, and it found the following musicians trying their hand:

Rory Dolan (lespecial)
Thomas Pridgen (Fever 333, ex-The Mars Volta, etc.)
Mike Stone
Stan Bicknell
Sam Groverman (Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio)
Nikki Glaspie (The Nth Power, Snarky Puppy, etc.)
Gergo Borlai
Thomas Lang (stOrk, etc.)

Ultimately, the role would go to John Hoffman. Outside of the talented roster mentioned above, there was some additional star power present during the auditions. Not only did Tool, etc. vocalist Maynard James Keenan serve as a runner of sorts, his Tool bandmate Danny Carey also sat in at one point, as did Primus vocalist/bassist Les Claypool‘s Oysterhead bandmate Stewart Copeland, among others.

lespecial‘s Rory Dolan is the first participant to be featured in this series, which the band have dubbed the ‘Primus Interstellar Drum Derby‘. Carey will be the next individual to inhabit the drum kit for Primus, having signed on to perform double duty during Primus‘s March 08th performance at ‘Tool Live In The Sand‘ in Punta Cana, DOM.

Following that, Primus will embark upon their first tour with Hoffman behind the kit in the spring. That run will celebrate Keenan turning 60 last year and find members of Primus, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer swapping in and out throughout the night.
