Mastodon‘s drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor took a stab at coming up with his own drum parts for Weather Report‘s 1977 track “Birdland” for Drumeo. While Dailor was familiar with the initial more modern ‘cover’ choices provided by Drumeo, he wound up being unfamiliar with the aforementioned jazz fusion track.
Of course, with Drumeo‘s involvement, Dailor‘s introduction to the track came about via a version of the song that had the percussion removed. After being tasked with coming up with his own parts, Dailor was then introduced to the actual version of the song to compare how his version stacked up. You can watch that whole process below:
