Yesterday, September 17th, marked the 28th anniversary of Tool‘s 3x multi-platinum third studio album, “Ænima“. Taking to social media, the chart-topping alternative metal favorites marked that anniversary with the below video. However, it was not the announcement diehard fans of the band have been anxiously awaiting.
Tool‘s timetable when it comes to their creative pursuits is best described as glacial. And while fans were given hope that they’d have the chance to acquire the band’s catalog on newly pressed vinyl back in 2017 amid a rumored remastering campaign, an interview given by drummer Danny Carey earlier in the year had raised hopes for a big announcement yesterday.
Speaking to Rick Beato this past March, Carey revealed that “Ænima” had newly been remastered for vinyl. He told Beato at the time:
“Man we just remastered ‘Ænima‘… the album, I should say. ‘Stinkfist‘ and ‘Eulogy‘ both sound incredible on that. The low end, the way things are sit together and all that — those are two of my favorites, that stuck out. That’s for sure. I think it might be just because I recently heard it on the 180g vinyl like you were talking about. I was like ‘oh my God.’ I forgot how good it sounded. I hadn’t heard it in an analog form in ages.”
As it stands now, there’s still no word on when this remastered edition of the acclaimed record will arrive, but you can manifest your disappointment regarding its absence in an physical manner. This previously released official ‘Ænima Where’s The Vinyl?’ shirt remains available from the group. If you’re not of the intended vintage, that shirt is a spoof of the popular ‘where’s the beef?’ ad campaign run by fast food chain Wendy’s back in the mid-80s.
