Deftones hit the stage for their last-minute surprise show at The Metro in Chicago, IL tonight, August 01st. The concert didn’t entirely go off without a hitch however, as guitarist Stephen Carpenter was forced to miss it due to illness. A message shared on the multi-platinum alternative metal band’s social media just ahead of the set read as follows:

“Unfortunately Stef won’t be with us tonight. He came down with a sudden illness today and despite his best efforts, he won’t be able to play. Fortunately we were able to make some last minute adjustments and the show will go on. See ya tonight!”

Performing without Carpenter isn’t an entirely uncommon occurrence for the band, as he has chosen to withdraw from all international touring with the group, citing his issues with anxiety. In his place, the outfit have been performing with Lance Jackman as a touring guitarist/backing vocalist since 2022 when the need arises.

The setlist for last night’s show saw the return of “Passenger“, a fan favorite from the group’s acclaimed 2000 album “White Pony“. The studio version of that song features Tool, etc. vocalist Maynard James Keenan on guest vocals. This performance marked the first time the song was played since 2019. The setlist for the night ran as follows:

Feiticeira
Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)
My Own Summer (Shove It)
Tempest
Swerve City
Diamond Eyes
Digital Bath
Needles And Pins
Lotion
Mascara
Passenger
Sextape
You’ve Seen The Butcher
Rosemary
Rocket Skates
Change (In The House Of Flies)
Genesis

The group will next be back onstage this Saturday, August 03rd, for a performance at the annual ‘Lollapalooza‘ festival in at Grant Park in Chicago, IL. As with their pair of sets at this past spring’s ‘Coachella“, the band’s time on stage at ‘Lollapalooza‘ is expected to be livestreamed, this time via hulu.com/lollapalooza.
