Metallica‘s new album “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct” has opened at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 291,000 equivalent albums sold. Of that number, 282,000 were traditional copies sold, the rest being made up from digital sales (10 individual tracks equaling an album/1,500 streams equaling an album.) It’s the band’s sixth consecutive album to open at #1 on the charts.
The numbers are down from the impressive 490,000 copies they sold in three days with the Friday release of “Death Magnetic” back in 2008, but much has also changed in the music industry in the eight years since that album was released.
