Deftones vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno has revealed his favorite song of all time to be an ’80s classic from the late genre-defying icon known as Prince. Moreno was asked which song topped all others for him as part of the ‘Totally Committed (The AWOLNATION Podcast)’.
AWOLNATION‘s Aaron Bruno, who also fronts recent Deftones openers The Barbarians Of California, asked Moreno that question in the below clip. The alternative metal legend quickly settled on “The Beautiful Ones” from Prince‘s 1984 film ‘Purple Rain‘ and its 13x multi-platinum soundtrack of the same name.
Moreno explained his choice as follows [transcribed by theprp.com]:
“My favorite song of all-time would have to be ‘The Beautiful Ones‘ [by] Prince. [It’s] an emotional rollercoaster. Great vocals, music’s f*cking beautiful. The first time hearing it was probably when I watched the movie [‘Purple Rain‘] as a kid. So you really get the visual, like, what’s going on the movie. It’s a real kind of transition in the movie when Apollonia first really realizes that she’s down for prince, right? As opposed to Morris. But he gets her with that song, like by the end, she’s just tears coming down.
Musically. There’s so many little things that happen. I mean, there’s one — I think it’s maybe two thirds of way through the song —and there’s this keyboard. real sort of, like diminished, kind of keyboard that comes in in the song, and it just… it’s an emotional tune, man.”
