It certainly seems like Deftones‘ tenth studio album will be out before the end of summer. The Sacramento, CA-based alternative metal icons first hit the studio for that effort in early 2024 with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters). While subsequent vocal sessions from singer/guitarist Chino Moreno followed in the spring of last year, little has been said of the record since.
While the band themselves have remained fairly active on the live front in the months that followed, it wasn’t until this past weekend that they began ramping up the hype train for this next batch of songs.
During their June 29th set at Crystal Palace Park, London, England, they teased ‘Private Music‘, with an apparent July 10th reveal/release date. Notably, their tease which appeared on the big screens adjacent to the stage during the concert, also mentioned that the record would be ‘distributed by Deftones‘, seemingly indicating a label shakeup. The band had most recently been signed with Reprise/Warner.
Now, in a newly livestreamed chat on B-Real‘s ‘The Dr. Greenthumb Show‘ featuring Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter as one of the guests, it was mentioned that the record would be arriving in August. Multi-platinum rapper/singer Everlast of House Of Pain fame was a fellow guest on that episode, which was hosted by Son Doobie of Funkdoobiest, and it was Everlast that indicated that release month.
After Doobie heaped praise on Everlast‘s forthcoming new album that is expected out later this year, Everlast went on to share his thoughts on a sampling of new Deftones music he was treated to by Carpenter. He had the following to say about that [transcribed by theprp.com]:
“Since we’re going to be on this kind of, you know, throwing flowers around attitude, this man [points to Carpenter] has a record coming out much sooner, in August, that I just heard a few songs from. [It] sounds like Deftones all got in time machines and got back out and hit the studio last week and are feeling young and beautiful.
That record is amazing, man, all three [songs] that I heard… It’s gonna be a good musical summer for people who like what we do. Or summer for them; for you and me, probably end of the year.”
Carpenter, who did not go on to confirm or deny the apparent August release plans, went on to say:
“We’re actually going back out — well, they’re out right now in Europe —I join back up with the band in August, and were doing Canada/U.S. mix.”
Doobie them chimed in:
“The music you played Steph, Strong One‘ [one of Carpenter‘s nicknames] is always treating us to what he’s got going. And, man, those songs are amazing. And, like I said, man, Chino sounds amazing… Just on it man, and sharp man. And yeah, man, your guys show is ridiculous, bro. It’s sickening… And then just to say again, you know, man, it’s just I can’t wait for you guys hear it, it’s so dope.”
