Update August 08th, 2018 10:13am:
It turns out this story wasn’t exactly true with this updated report sharing a much sadder tale.
Original Story:
This past weekend saw the annual ‘Wacken Open Air‘ festival held in Wacken, Germany, and while the festival makes headlines every year in its own right, this time around it is two attendees who have stolen the spotlight from the bands that played.
According to a report over at Deutsche Welle, two elderly German men escaped their nursing home in nearby Dithmarscher and traveled roughly 25 miles to attend this year’s edition of the festival. It is presently unclear how they managed to make the trek.
Staff at the nursing home reported the two men missing on Friday, August 03rd, and later located the two escapees in attendance at the festival at 3am. Local police spokeswoman Merle Neufeld told public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk of the duo: “They obviously liked the metal festival. The care home quickly organized a return transport after police picked them up.”
Authorities noted that the two unidentified men were “disoriented and dazed” when they were located at the festival with Itzehoe police department spokesman Peter Berndt commenting to The Washington Post:
“They were then taken to the medical tent on the festival site and were sent back by taxi at around 6:30 a.m. We had to explain to them why they had to go home — but in the end, they went back voluntarily.”
This year’s edition of the ‘Wacken Open Air‘ saw performances from Judas Priest, Nightwish, In Flames, Ghost, Behemoth and many more.
