Watch Mr. Bungle Return To The Stage For Their First Live Show Since Mike Patton’s Mental Health Struggles

Last night (December 08th) saw the triumphant live return of Mr. Bungle to the stage. The avant-garde alternative metal outfit played their first proper live show since February of 2020 at the Teatro Coliseo in Santiago, Chile.

Given the band’s past history with hiatuses, a two-year plus gap between live shows is relatively minor, but the show also served as a comeback for vocalist Mike Patton. The esteemed and ever-prolific vocalist cancelled a number of previously booked live shows with both Mr. Bungle and Faith No More amid the pandemic as he struggled with agoraphobia and alcoholism.

Having since received treatment and therapy, Patton was front and center with the group last night, ripping through a setlist that consisted of the following tracks:

Won’t You Be My Neighbor” (Fred Rogers cover)
Anarchy Up Your Anus
Spreading The Thighs Of Death
Loss For Words” (Corrosion Of Conformity cover)
Glutton For Punishment
Malfunction” (Cro-Mags cover)
Raping Your Mind
Just Sit There” (Crumbsuckers cover)
Bungle Grind
Hell Awaits” (Slayer cover) (partial)
Summer Breeze” (Seals & Crofts cover)
Cold War” (Siege cover)
Hypocrites” (partial)
Speak Spanish Or Die” (Stormtroopers Of Death cover)
World Up My Ass” (Circle Jerks cover)
Sudden Death
Gracias a la Vida” (Violeta Parra cover) (live debut)
Fuck The USA” (The Exploited cover)

The latest incarnation of Mr. Bungle joined Patton for the set, including guitarists Trey Spruance and Scott Ian (Anthrax), bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Dave Lombardo (Testament, ex-Slayer, etc.).

In July of this year, Patton opened about his pandemic era mental health struggles, stating, “I became completely isolated and almost antisocial [and] afraid of people.” Speaking this past October to The Guardian he further spoke of his struggles, revealing that alcohol abuse had also become an issue during that timeframe.
