System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian Is Currently More Interested In Writing Instrumental Music

Speaking recently with Expert Magazine, System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian discussed his current work scoring a number of movies and video games with his work for the films ‘Furious – The Legend Of Kolovrat‘ and ‘Intent To Destroy‘ being among his latest to see a release.

During the conversation he also spoke of how he is currently uninterested in writing vocals and prefers to compose instrumentals these days. A translated version of the interview has been shared via Facebook and when asked if he finds it hard to compose scores after establishing himself primarily as a vocalist, he offered:

“Screw vocals. I’m tired of it. During a conversation with a friend yesterday I came up with an idea: before we started making music, I was mainly known as a poet and vocalist. I wrote poetry every day. It was what I did constantly, what made me release two poetry books. In fact, I came to music from words.

I wrote so many lyrics that it stopped to be interesting. Not because there is nothing I want to talk or sing about. Sure there are topics I don’t want to write lyrics to but at least I can pull out some new emotions out of it. Poetry is always something that opens yourself up and supports self-determination. I just did it for too long. Now I am more interested in writing instrumental pieces of music.”

Tankian has long been rumored to be the holdout on a new System Of A Down album as other members of the band spoke late last year of some fifteen new songs being written. Interviews conducted since have been far less hopeful on the prospect of it coming together however.
