Rock Is No Longer The Most Popular Music Genre In The United States

Nielsen Music have revealed that for the first time since they began measuring the consumption of music in 1991, rock music is no longer the top musical genre in the United States for overall consumption by the public. Using tracking data compiled from the first half of this year, hip hop/R&B have knocked the long reigning genre of choice off the top of the charts and now accounts for 25.1% of the market share.

Rock ranked in second with 23%. However, rock still accounts for the most overall album sales, with 40% of all album sales in the country attributed to the genre. Hip hop/R&B’s newfound dominance comes predominantly via streaming, accounting to 29% of all on-demand streaming in the United States.
