The opening sequence of this album sets the tone for what is one of the most atmospheric and anthemic records to cross my path. Swirling winds and haunting triangular sounds carry the listener to another place, its almost as if they want to prepare you for the 10 songs that lie ahead. Prepare to be amazed, prepare to make space in your cd collection.
Opening song 'American Made' is crying out to the disenchanted with its anthemic chorus "I am american, I am an alien, I am a man and thats what defines me". The music and vocals simmer for the first part of the song only to reach boiling point half way through as if to make there point, and you cant help but take notice as the singer throws himself into a hardcore frenzy and the music takes a decidely harder edge. Unlike most bands who attempt this kind of dynamic Zyon never lose touch with the core themes of the song so it feels more like a natrual transistion rather than disjointed.
'New Light' follows the trend of 'American Made' with its varying dynamic. The vocals vary from Bowie esque singing to hardcore gutteral screams with an uplifting sting in its tail. However, the bulk of the album is made up of more melodic slower songs. 'Chasing The Dragon' is an acoustic ballad like song, further displaying the talented musicianship and song writing on a key with A Perfect Circle. The band are obviously inspired by many genres of music which is why this cd is particularly appealing to fans of all music. From the darker, sinister sounds of 'Feasting On the Blind' to the hardcore elements of 'New Light' we begin to get a full picture of what this band has to offer. Whilst the songs towards the end of the record are not as strong as those before it this is still essential for those wanting to broaden there musical horizons.
