Graduating from cassette to CD, Ultra Dolphins have joined forces with Robotic Empire for "Why Are You Laugh", an EP that collects some older tracks, remasters them and sounds a lot like a less bratty Blood Brothers who've smoked far more pot.
Much of "Why Are You Laugh" is angular and indecisive, constantly shifting in unconventional directions. While somewhat lo-fi in aesthetic, the recklessness and abrasive punk nature see the bands vocals and guitar work scratch and claw like a wildcat. This highly expressive slant provides an engaging dynamic contrast to the often more cumbersome and involved rhythm section.
For all the spastic outbursts, abstract part changes and ridiculously jagged edges though, it is in the somewhat hidden nature of the bands material that their true skill shines through. Sure they may try to mask their seemingly At The Drive-In/Fall Of Troy styled sonic aspirations in screeching harmonics and youthful menace.
But every now and then a subdued intelligent melody surfaces, suggesting that there is more than just searing discordant noise to be had from this raucous trio. Of course, it rarely lasts long and is quickly replaced by a hyperactive freak-out. But clearly, these dolphins are a lot smarter than they choose to let on and perhaps their upcoming full-length will properly display that.
