Various Artists - Too Legit For The Pit - Hardcore Takes The Rap

Mention the idea of a metal band covering rap songs and visions of "Loud Rocks" or "Take A Bite Outta Rhyme" spring to mind and although both had their own merits, neither were received too particularly well by the public. Yet for some reason, the idea of predominantly hardcore and metalcore acts covering true rap classics, most of which come from the late 80's/early 90's, is one that is almost impossible to not have your curiosity piqued by. Such is the case here, where acts from a genre that has a rep for being close minded to new ideas, tackle songs that leave most of them completely out of their element. Oddly enough though its this energy and uncertainty that makes this album such an interesting listen. Sure there's the given favorites and incredibly strong tracks like Candiria's take on Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre's "Deep Cover" or E.Town Concrete's cover of the Nas breakout hit "The World Is Yours". But there's also the Hoods straight forward stomp on their version of L.L. Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" or Throwdown's charring rendition of Sir Mix-A-Lot's campy classic "Baby Got Back". With a hidden version of N.W.A.'s "Automobile" and the lightly tinged punk stomp of F.O. The Smack Magnet's cover of Digital Underground's "The Humpty Dance", there's a wide variety of ideas on display here on just how each band decided to interpret the songs. Yes, there are also a few tracks here that fall flat on their face, but if anything overall, this CD is an interesting journey of hearing most of the bands included try things that are completely unexpected from them, and for that this CD is more than legit enough for an occasional listen.
