Tolerance - Demo

Arizona's Tolerance have been steadily building a name for themselves over the past few years and with the music contained upon this latest demo, its not hard to see why. Flush with an edgy melodic approach on modern metal that is equal parts Far, Incubus and finger eleven as it is Failure and Tool, the band express themselves through emotive croons placed overtop of interweaving spacey guitar parts that capture the attention through both a sense of urgency and a dizzying vacuum of sound.

The emotional vocals of band frontman Cory drip with conviction and feeling as their slightly hoarse tones accentuate the generally melodic delivery, which comes complete with emphatic inflections and lulled breakdowns somewhat reminiscent to that of Glassjaw or the Deftones. The guitar work is almost always mesmerizing, sculpting an environment of swirling plucks and strums that are aided heavily by effects, bringing to mind Failure and A Perfect Circle's more creative moments, while an array of punchy straight forward riffs akin to Incubus inject some intensity into the mix. The bass playing is competent and takes the guitars direction into account, tacking on a shade of effects itself to create a dynamic low end that solidly fills out the tracks, while the drumming performance is quite aggressive and relies upon consistent snare hits and alternating hi-hat and cymbal splashes, energizing and focusing the more indulgent parts of the songs as a whole.

Essentially what Tolerance have assembled here is a rough mixture of emocore and progressive rock, heavily emphasizing melody, while immersing the listener in tendrils of delicate guitar work that is occasionally spiked with a distorted edge. The songs are accessible and able to draw the listener in quite easily with their ambient styled playing, but are also just as able to shove them forward with a driving riff or pointed chorus. Still, that said, overall the songs feels a tad rough around the edges and the vocals can sound a bit too static and complacent, rarely switching tone with any sharp dynamic flair. If they were perhaps a bit more agitated or expressed with a more ambitious range, the momentum shifts of the songs would become all the more powerful, though that's not to say they are at all lackluster in their current state. Tolerance are a band with a lot to offer and the talent and entrancing sonic climates they are able to serve up are brightly visible on this release, suggesting that though they may have not entirely hit their peak stride yet, they already well off and running.
