Aside from thumbing their nose at Thor with the title of their Mediaskare debut, "We Invented Thunder"; The Burning Room also display a sense of bravado that is quite evident throughout the course of the album. The band, who feature former Anatomy Of A Ghost guitarist Dewey Halpaus, are cocky and aren't afraid to show it. This disposition works both ways for them as they attempt to strike a balance between hyperactive screamo petulance and metalcore devastation.
Attitude wise, a lot of what is laid out here is similar in that to Every Time I Die. The band rip through each track with confidence and biting focus, snarling out their aggression over cagey riffs and tossing in some non-committal post-rock melodic parts at regular intervals. Instrumentally however, things are more on course with Evergreen Terrace and the like, as the group stretch out the usually tightly wound metalcore format by adding in some restless space between the sharp breakdowns and frenetic guitar fueled noise.
In fact, it's surprising to hear how just how loose the group can be and how long they can ride out spiraling noise before it breaks (or breakdowns.) That said, it's not always entirely exciting and after awhile, it all just kind of drags on. Plus, there's also the cringe-worthy pop-punk singing on the track "Short Drop With A Sudden Stop", which comes complete with atonal melodic croons and cliche vocals like "would you cry if you were dead inside". But hey, it could always be worse as they're at least not full-on copping Swedish death metal and topping it off it with the Budweiser blues.
