The Beautiful Mistake - Light A Match, For I Deserve To Burn

To be completely honest, playing in a band that can justifiably be compared to the likes of Thursday, The Juliana Theory, From Autumn To Ashes, Jimmy Eat World and more in this day and age is about as commonplace as toilet in a bathroom; But despite such obstacles as the aforementioned scene overpopulation and more being placed in front of them, The Beautiful Mistake still persevere to deliver an interesting take on the style. With a general sense of uneasiness and a tendency to embrace the heavier side of things firmly in place, plus a few nods to progressive territory thrown in in terms of song structuring, the group leave somewhat of a lasting impression and align themselves as perhaps one of the next bands to make it big in this genre.

With vocals that range from a few asphyxiated hardcore styled screams to the kind of emotive yet humble melodic singing one has come to expect of the rapidly burgeoning genre, the band maintain a consistent playing field for both the harder and softer teams. This, when coupled alongside some colorfully searing guitar riffing and the like in the background, really begins to reel the listener in. Tack on a few choruses that will undoubtedly lodge themselves within the listeners brain and add in enough aggression and emo based melancholy to keep both sides happy and you have what looks to be a winning combination for commercial success.

However, while having such factors at play are indeed quite cliche as of late, this is where the album deviates as "Light A Match, For I Deserve To Burn" feels far more heartfelt and experimental, taking on a variety of different faces and emotions to convey the bands creativity. From electronically programmed drumming to acoustic passages and straight forward rockers, they have taken enough time to diversify and polish their craft to keep it feeling honest and at times even empowering. With a few unconventional breakdowns and an overall mature musical cognition the band are able to slice right through the abundance of nu-metal come nu-emo bands who are now practicing this style of music and show why dedication to song writing and a true appreciation of the musical forms will always win in the end. Sure it can be said that the albums pace is a bit turgid and the songs can blur into each other on more than one occasion; But its still leaps and bounds beyond the current records of most of their peers, making this album a solid listen and one that will no doubt grab the attention of many a listener looking for something with a little more substance and talent.
