Supersoul - Bloom

Supersoul is definitely a great surprise from Texas. Amazing how this band has established a sound of their own in only one year of (hard) work. Some people say they're the marriage between Deftones and The Cure. Well, since I don't know The Cure very much, I'll try to explain what do they sound like in other words and comparisons. I can definitely sense the Deftones influence, in elements like Norman's beautiful and emotional voice, as well as the excellent melodies coming out from the guitars of J and Scott. Some songs sounds so beautiful that almost become depressive, like Crush (an extremely beautiful ballad with Norman singing with only a piano and drums on the background). Supersoul has such a great and unique thing to show to people that's almost impossible, and also unfair to compare then to any other band. Everytime I listen to Norman's voice, I become impressed of how much this guy can sing. I really love how the vocals work here. While Norman holds the melody, Scott yells like a maniac. Something they do a lot and that I love is like, when Norman is singing on the front, and Scott comes out from nowhere and starts to scream at the back. D's bass follows the extremely melodic guitar lines from talented guitarists J and Scott. In songs like Down Conforter they show how they work well together. Mikey's drums aren't something that outstands, but that's something that really don't compromise the band's intense style. Mikey is, though, a creative drummer, adding nice drum sounds at the correct time. The using of piano and cello, respectively by Norman and J, increase a lot for the band's emotional sound. Standout tracks would have to be Elixir High, which is an unbelievably emotional song that turns out to get heavy in it's end, even with a bit of rap, and Crush, that almost made me cry the first time I heard. I swear that there're no downsides in this record. Sometimes, though, I notice that the vocals get a little too loud, like the singer getting too close to the mic when recording. Nothing that compromises, but it's kinda disappointing when you're hearing a song which vocals are envolving you and then... BAM, you almost get scared by how it's volume increased. That can be noted specially in the song Bloom. Something that disappointed me a lot is that they haven't put the song Surreal in the CD, but it's all good. If you're not familiarized to what Supersoul's doing, you should. Bloom is a must have, definitely one of the best releases I heard in the year of 1999, and I'm sure it will be their key to the door that will take them to the international acceptance. Be prepared for when they finally conquer the world with their extremely killer tunes.
