Superheist - 8 Miles High

Superheist are perhaps one of the best heavy bands to ever emerge from the unlikely continent of Australia in what seems like forever. Combining a refreshing blend of rapcore done right, alternative metal and new metal, the band sound like a mix of the Deftones, Depeche Mode, Orgy and Hotwire with a strong regiment of straight forward riffs akin to Rage Against The Machine's more focused moments.

Vocally a sharp flow with a humble and coercing croon is laid down, backed by mountains of emotion and a solid conviction that truly shines when the aggravation builds up into screams powerful enough to topple a building. Combining these elements with a melodic side that is both refined and soothing, the group manage to envelope their sound with a viciously aggressive, yet cathartic aura of compelling musicianship that would easily flip the Modern Rock radio charts on their ear if ever given the chance. With sharp, downtuned guitar work, rock solid basslines and a more than competent drummer, the group fill out the bottom end of their auditory tackle with finesse and talent and as if this alone wasn't enough, there's also a bevy of backup vocals and various programmed ambiance including stringed instruments and keyboards.

In the end it all boils down to an intoxicating blend of sounds that strikes the listener from all angles, especially on the almost symphonic choruses of the albums opening track "Pulse" or the straight forward bulldozer crunch of "Two Faced (Check Ya Head Up)" and "Detonate". Sure there's a few times when the material can drone on or lose its momentum and a little polish would do good occasionally, but overall this bands bright moments manage to outshine any of their minor blemishes and as such this disc comes highly recommended. While the bulk of the material that mixes rap with metal getting play over in the North American scene feels sugar coated and contrived, Superheist instead bring together the best of both worlds, piling on truckloads of raging aggression while also paying attention to the intricate art of writing incredibly catchy songs. That said, these five boys are a much needed boost of energy for not only the Australian music scene, but the new metal scene as a whole. Brimming with radio friendly hooks, loud crunchy guitars and enough anger to satisfy most heavy music fans cravings, they just might be able to rob the ears of the ever necessary North American audience, should the right opportunity arise for them.
