Subvert - Assisted Suicides

This new full length from Subvert titled "Assisted Suicides" sees them going about their business in typically uncompromising fashion following the 1000 split C.D's they sold when they toured the width and length of Britain. Most importantly they offer further proof that we dont need to rely on America for our heavy needs with 11 tracks that are equally thoughtful and heavy.

As crushing as it may be, there are many subtleties on the album which counter balance the more full on aggro moments creating songs that carry and involve the listener. Vocally the band have a good formula and as such they stick to it throughout. This consists of Jim Marten's bark like shouts that have an uncanny resemblence to Luke Lloyd of Pulkas and a more restrained croon that is not so much sung but rather spoken tunefully. These two styles are played off against each other and work to briliant effect in creating impassioned songs such as "Mannequin". My only beef is that it's a similar trait to most of the songs and whilst we know it can work, it can become tiresome and at times flat sounding.

The band share the creativeness of fellow U.K. act Earthtone 9 but in truth they are closer to the likes of Pulkas and Neurosis with their thick and heavy sound. As with many of the great heavy bands the bass plays a fundamanetal part with the listener feeling each and every rumble in their gut. Anyone with even the slightest liking of bands such as Sepultura or even Vision Of Disorder should investigate further as this band show equal amounts of both energy and restraint whilst capturing that distinct British sound that has an air of unease about it. Sure it's a band still in it's development but this is like a diamond in the rough just waiting to come through and I have no doubt they will. File under "for those wanting escape the current nu metal hype and opt for something entirly more relevant and satisfying".
