Stutterfly - Broken In Pieces...

Slowly building up their fan base in and around their local scene of the lower mainland of B.C. over the past few years, Stutterfly have now emerged as one of the few credible acts representing Canada in today's modern metal scene. Joining the ranks of bands like finger eleven, Chore, Breach Of Trust and a handful more, they are one of the select few who actually have something creative to offer rather than the contrived radio rock their fellow countrymen Nickelback, Default and Our Lady Peace have made the nation famous for. With a sound that is loosely based upon melodic hardcore and modern metal, this Kelowna based quartet flesh out an emotional blend of music that can bring to mind the likes of Embodyment, Poison The Well and finger eleven, combining melancholic harmonies with abrasive screams and hungry downtuned riffs that assault the listener with cleansing showers of punchy melodic aggression.

A three pronged vocal assault courtesy of all of the bands stringed instrumentalists is a key point of why their music works so well. With wrenching hardcore styled screams and ferocious yells and wails piercing through calm sullen melodies and harmonies they manage to create an intense contrast of conflicting moods that enraptures and brutalizes the listener, often in the same verse. Performed diligently with each emotional aspect passionately expressed, the oral approach is intoxicating and powerful, easily edging the band out ahead of the pack. Guitar wise the offering is layered with chunky modern metal styled riffs that bulk up their attacks in weighty swats and lunges doubled up with intriguing harmonic notes and some occasional acoustic strumming. Hefty bass lines then cement themselves with an almost Tool reminiscent flair, assertively pushing the tracks onward while stiff percussion, rife with cleverly calculated snare variation and hi-hat/cymbal work injects a sense of pointed rigidness into the music as a whole.

With a strong and omnifarious singing performance such as the one laid out here, its hard not to be impressed by the talent of which all three vocalists possess. Furthermore, their ability to meld the aforementioned contributions with their loud/quiet guitar playing dynamics only makes their music all the more persuasive. With that said though, the instrumental portions of the songs can tend to feel a bit mediocre overall, drawing upon somewhat predictable new metal stylings and congested song structures which tend to dam themselves with unnecessary part changes and tempo shifts rather than channel off into cathartic releases which let their individual parts shine. This is not to say that the band are bad songwriters though, rather that they just seem a bit too ambitious and could benefit from toning things down a bit as it is songs with drawn out concentrated bursts of fiery emotion like "Out Of The Mud" and "Gun In Hand" which really stand out from the rest. With a bit of structural improvement and some stronger emphasis put on more creative instrumentation, the band will truly be unstoppable as their vocal work in its current form is already top notch; Let's just hope they don't stutter bringing the rest of their craft up to par the next time out.
