Still Breathing - September
They say that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And you'd almost believe it in the case of Still Breathing who side step any of the cliche and typical ridicule which can so often be aimed at female fronted metal bands.
Vocalist Dacey is easily on a par with Tarrie B of Tura Satana fame in the all out screaming stakes and delivers her vocals in a heated Walls of Jericho fashion. With abrasive riffage, pummelling beats and seething vocals the music is juxtaposed between that of label mates Living Sacrifice and the definitive metalcore band Turmoil. The vocals are clearly competent but it can not distract from the fact that they are overly similar from song to song and as such it tends to grate. Take each song on it own merits and it's fine, more than fine when that song happens to be 'Sweet Wound Sower' or 'Prevails' but as a whole their simply isn't enough to give this record any kind of longevity. The percussion injects life into an otherwise tedious record not helped by a seemingly under produced guitar sound. All this is rather a shame as the breathy vocals of 'One Kiss' backed by melancholic distorted guitar hint that there is more to this band than the one dimension we are led to believe but it does little to save an otherwise boring listen.
