SPiNE - The Dirty Sanchez
This CD is as close to a drug as you can get from a cellophane square in the sense that after a few listens that you're hooked put together 5 talented musicians, throw in keyboards, samples and three on vocals including one female and you have a 8-ball of some serious shit. The band at times can draw parts from various other bands such as older Orange 9mm and Stuck Mojo and some parts you can compare to other bands and say "hey that kinda sounds like this band", but it for sure is definitely original. 20 tracks highlight this uncompromising release and variety is the menu, you'd have a hard time to classify or pigeon hole this band into any set niche as the songs cover the ground of basically everything that's been incorporated into our genre, with the haunting song "Muniquita" in which Jaye (AKA Jennifer bassist for the band) does a haunting duet which features the funeral home styled organ tones which would be better accustomed to a eulogy. You also have the apocalyptic sounding "Aplot2kylldking" which can make you feel like you're involved in battle to the death in a chaotic wasteland. Then there's the rap heavy "Pump" which somewhat follows the style of an old "Eazy-E" song even using the same sample the rapper himself used making it all the more a treat for the ears. The release is solid straight through in fact it would take the might of a charging Juggernaut to budge this behemoth of a band from their perch. The sound is thick and bolted down tight with the inclusion of a female and two other vocalists adding a plan of auditory combat not heard before in such a groove heavy style. All the vocalists play off each other well to the point that it doesn't feel like one is the set singer, from trading off raps with a skill accustomed to the Beastie Boys to sharing the angered screams akin to the best in the genre they really have it down to a science. The lyrics can range from intense and serious to offbeat comic book references and other odd commentary which really can keep the listener entertained. Another thing evident in the bands feel is the humor and the comfort they have with each other. Just by judging from the album name "The Dirty Sanchez" (Which refers to a lewd sexual act which involves a fecal mustache.) to their album insert which states in the place of sponsorship statements the band uses these phrases in their place "Johnny 3 uses drugs", "Sean G. uses redtag items" as well as others really showcase the confidence and humor the band exudes. Samples really add to the collective groove giving a sense of almost a variety show of heavy rapcore with twisted commercial breaks and really give more depth to the madness that is SPiNE. The band has been around for nearly 7 years and it shows, their technique is fast, hard and heavy and refined with such a predatory style it will only be a few listens till you fall victim to SPiNE.
