Spike 1000 are a female fronted California based quartet who have some fairly blunt lyrical content placed over top of their raw modern metal assault, bringing to mind an organic Rage Against The Machine mixed with the likes of OTEP. The music is abrasive and raw and the vocals are empowered and conformational, belting out lyrical content that is sure to raise eyebrows, such as the line "you better run with your dick between your legs", from the opening cut, "Manwhore".
Vocally, band frontwoman Shannon Harris saunters between sultry croons and wrenching hoarse throated barks as she punctuates her aggressive delivery with unwavering conviction and soothing melody. Guitar wise, the outing is packed with searing new metal based riffs that screech, squeal and crunch at all the right intervals, while thuggish basslines take on the supportive role, injecting a sense of buoyancy into the mix that is only strengthened by a thunderously agitated drumming performance.
One of the bands main strengths is the oft melodic vocal work of Harris, who guides the songs forth with blind faith and welcome helpings of melody. There are also a few dynamic structural switches here and there that catch the ear quite easily, making for a pleasant change of pace. However, though musically competent, the instrumental section of Spike 1000 seem to lack in originality, dwelling within the stylings of late 90's rapcore background music that has been done to death. The vocals are also fairly monotonous and lack any broad range, sticking to a certain empowered tone and following it through with only harmonic flourishes left to round things off. As such, its hard to really gain anything worthwhile from this album, as aside from the fact that its female fronted, its really nothing that hasn't been done before. If you want to see a powerful female performance, then Spike 1000 may be just right for you, but if you require a bit more innovation and depth, you'll most likely want to not "waste" your time.
