Skard - Malfunction Junction

Skard are an animated bunch who combine elements of Korn, Disturbed and Alice In Chains into a reckless fireball of energy and emotion. Burning through the albums 12 tracks, the group experiment heavily and come up with a few interesting ideas along with a few that may leave the listener wondering the hell they just heard.

Vocally, the most similar comparison could be drawn with Alice In Chains front man Layne Staley. Using roomy, yet slightly wavering croons and moans, the words continually glide over top of the music with ease and constant embellishment. There's also a darker side at play as well though, utilizing from the gut screams and bellows, along with a few rapcore styled flows to give the tracks added punch. Guitar wise, there's traces of Korn meets a more traditional metal styling, as solos collide with screeching noise and a mildly crispy new metal sound. Employing various effects, the sound overall can feel a bit disorienting and slippery, though it does have its moments now and then. Meanwhile, the drums and bass slowly boil over in the background, both with a slightly detuned demeanor and thuggish riffs and beats that although are somewhat monotonous, do a solid job of keeping the pace.

Unfortunately, this release suffers from a lot of traps which many musicians of the past have also fell victim to. The first and biggest concern is the song writing, which relies on a lot of pauses, breakdowns and constant solos filled with screeching noise that rarely seems to deviate from its set course. As a result the music begins to drone on and on, making the listener wait anxiously for a change that never seems to come. With a more focused approach and less sloppy musicianship, the band could easily capitalize on the darkly charming vocals and make their songs hook into their prey with both intensity and strength. Another thing that deserves mention, is the odd sounds with which vocalist Kevin experiments with. Imitating a cat meowing on the aptly titled "Cat's Meow" and using goblin like laughs on the track "Touched", its hard to take the songs seriously as the end result winds up being laughable above anything else. Another indulgence the group have is saturating the tracks with vocals and starting almost every song off with a drum intro which goes into a guitar riff/vocal build up/verse, etc. In the end, its a formula which they repeat ad nauseam and as such, this junction of musical ideas will need a lot of work before it becomes something that will win over the masses. Because as it is now, there's a lot of bugs left to fix before they can alleviate the malfunction.
