Singe - Lysergic Dream

Singe are sure to gain attention in the underground scene when considering this outing was produced by none other than Shaun Lopez of Far/The Revolution Smile fame, and thankfully, such attention is warranted as their graceful blend of emocore meets alternative metal is quite pleasant on the ears. Sounding like an amalgamation of finger eleven and perhaps Cold, Singe combine inspiring vocal melodies with downtrodden tempos that vividly contrast the brightness of hope with the bleakness of despair.

Tonally, band frontman Andy Quershi sounds somewhat similar to finger eleven's Scott Anderson and Bush's Gavin Rossdale, though he chooses to croon out his emotional verses with a weathered elegance that suggests he's suffered his fair share of heartache, but is content with it, choosing to express his feelings with melancholic composure rather than enraged rants or screams. The guitar work included is fairly emocore reminiscent, though it caters mainly to the darker end of the spectrum, plunging forth with hard hitting simmering paced riffs that can bring to mind a severely depressed version of Failure. The basslines manage to add their own elements to the mix, but for the most part attach themselves to the guitar work and as such, the groups sonic focus becomes all the more impenetrable, hopelessly sweeping the listener back into their chair. Meanwhile, the percussion is quite forgiving and tends to compliment its stringed comrades parts with a roomy playing style that leaves many well placed gaps for guitar based sonic experimentation to blossom in.

Singe's music is definitely a talented affair and the cohesiveness of all band members following the same path is a quality that deserves to be marveled at. Their song writing stays close to certain points and adamantly drives them home, all the while possessing a kind of emotional numbness that is constructively expressed, showing off a lot more maturity than most bands who choose to immerse themselves in the darker side of the emotional spectrum as of late. Unfortunately though, this distinct characteristic can also weigh the band down as the songs run their course. There's not much in terms of variation from track to track and there is also very little in the way of dynamic breakdowns, which all in all keeps the material fairly uneventful. Still, in a musical climate where effects and gimmicks have saturated almost all music out there, this EP holds its own and is a highly enjoyable slab of cathartic, brooding emotion that will connect with anyone who is looking for something a bit slower paced, even if it does require a slightly depressed mindset to fully understand.
