Various Artists - Redefine The Rockstar Volume 2
"Redefine The Rockstar" is a bold statement to make and something and yet something that hypothetically is almost unachievable, unfortunately as hard as this compilation tries it fails to do so. It's very ambitious in nature showcasing a wide array of genres from punk and dark metal to rapcore and spacey instrumental jams, but in the end it lacks a cohesiveness that can fully justify it. A somber tone is taken by the start off track with a gloomy metal reminiscent of Danzig which collides into a sullen pop/alternative ballad on the second track. It's this lack of flow throughout the tracks that works negatively to in turn alienating the listener from complete enjoyment of the CD. Based more upon music that perhaps appeals to the older crowd, alot of it would be considered somewhat stagnant or cliche to today's anger craving teenagers. Things that would keep this album away from that crowd is a decidedly heavy favor of Ramones styled slacker punk plus the fact that most of the CD's heavier moments are lost in a late 80's reminiscent black metal dampens any power that could be showcased and the slow numbers for the most part drift aimlessly without purpose. A few stand out numbers do rear their head on the CD though, particularly Xashinto's relentless funk rapcore assault of "Inferno" and the Forgotten Gods "Asgardian Jam" which can take a listener through an expansive musical soundscape with its tribal drum heavy instrumental glory. Although "Redefine The Rockstar" is a noble attempt at showcasing independent acts, it's hard to really keep a focused enjoyment with the array of genres that seem to constantly conflict with each other, not too mention the been there done that feel to most of the heavier acts on the CD. If you're looking for music and your tastes aren't too particular or you long for music reminiscent of days past, then this may be the CD for you.
