For their new EP Purity's Failure chose to work with rising-producer Andrew Schneider, a man known for his work with Cave In, The Red Chord and others. That decision has seemingly paid off for them as the bands lingering take on hardcore, punk, metal and experimental indie-rock is as chaotic and varied as that of Schneider's production credits.
While the outing starts off with snarling punk-oriented hardcore customized with churning metallic riffs, the material soon begins to unravel. Ultimately sandwiched somewhere between the works of Shai Hulud, Cave In and older Boy Sets Fire, the bands message is intensely expressed, yet their focus remains varied. From looming aggressive ambiance littered with countless build-ups to screamed vocals going up against coarsely sung melodies, the group prove themselves to be quite adept at mixing things up.
Through it all they translate a genuine sense of belief and urgency and that is perhaps their strongest aspect. That's not to discount the lumbering approach they take to splicing together multiple styles though as their sense of flow is rather unique. By abandoning the cliched chaos often associated with this genre they manage to distinguish themselves and create some fairly intriguing moments. Still, their lust for drawn-out instrumentation can be taxing and not every track they deliver here is memorable. But whether droning on with stubborn expansiveness or pounding their chest with a traditional beatdown, they still succeed at nearly everything they do.
