Papa Roach - Old Friends From Young Years

Papa Roach are one of the big names on the indie scene and this release is one of the reasons why. One thing noticeable while listening to P-Roach is the loose grooves they compose. The songs always feel nice and roomy, yet each part tightly intertwines as one into an acute sonic assault. Jacoby's melodic vocals can lure you in like prey into a spider web and then viciously attack you with the machine gun fury of jagged rap tinged vocals. Lyrics can range from the offbeat and downright hilarious yet blistering track "PEEWAGON" in which Jacoby croons, "I go to my friends house to sleep at night. I try not to pee on myself.". To the thought provoking "Liquid Diet" which seems to contain a strong message about alcoholism and spousal abuse. While The track "Shut Up N Die (reprise)" features looped reversed beats with Jacoby rapping along in what sounds to be a freestyle. The bass is always rumbling without being overly downtuned and the drums are constantly on point kicking and pumping like the pistons of a well oiled machine. Some experimentation with mixing and soundclips also take place on this release, as well do refined melodic outros and interludes which can be subtlety used to catch your breath before you're propelled back into the fray. A definite Latin/Flamenco influence is peppered throughout most of the albums cuts. Some of the things that you definitely have to love about Papa Roach are the intense distinct sound they have, they can be loosely strewn or tensely woven and they still pack an extensive amount of frenzied aggression into their music, even with incoherent screams and mumbles you still feel the energy this band exudes. Papa Roach can only get better as they hone and tighten their craft into more tactful pounding music. This album is a definite must have for anyone who appreciates songs that can keep you interested as well as pummel you.
