Prevent Falls - A Newer More Shattered You

The increasingly popular roster of bands on Equal Vision records is testament to their ability to pluck such fine, diverse and often raw talent. Prevent Falls are no exception to this rule with their debut 'A Newer More Shattered You' which although impressive exhibits traits not uncommon to debuts in terms of rough edges and lack of attention to the more finer details that separate good and great albums.

Post hardcore with melodic leanings, Prevent Falls don't stray to far from the template as laid down by the great Quicksand or indeed many of the bands that followed right up to the more recent Rival Schools incarnation but where those mentioned bands have experience on side, Prevent Falls have equal amounts of youthful energy which counts for much when you play the kind of urgent compact melodic rock which could potentially adorn any of the coming of age/high school movie soundtracks of the last few years. In truth, although the band have slabs of potentially pop laden tunes they keep things just abrasive enough to keep them a well kept secret. The skate punk beginnings of "Red Eye" casts evidence as to why they are sure to win people over as the track is surely a live favorite if not best track on the album. The vocals on the whole are solid yet could do with some fine tuning at the higher end of the scale where he is noticeably stretched in songs such as "As The Crowd Fades" but for the most part Jeff holds his own and the screamo vocals he injects give the record an edge it would have otherwise lacked.

Ultimately although this record is somewhat a diamond in the rough it should be able to cast its net far and wide with fans of Thursday, Saves The Day and even Thrice surely able to appreciate something from this. In the current climate it's certainly a great time to be in a band that writes "sensitive" lyrics and puts them to post-hardcore rock. Thank god I'm not cynical and thank god Prevent Falls don't simply cater for that need.
