Phyllis - Smoovy

Combining elements of rapcore and funk, Phyllis' sonic assault comes in the form of "Smoovy", the band's debut record. Their sound is somewhat comparable to bands like Limp Bizkit and old school Incubus, though overall those comparisons don't do the band justice and are only put here for those of you who really need them, because, even though Phyllis is a rapcore band, they sure know how to take advantage of the genre, creating songs with a vibe as dark as (hed)p.e.'s as well as happy songs along the lines of 311.

The band tries and succeeds on standing apart from other rapcore acts for a few reasons, like, for instance, it seems as though they avoid screaming. In fact, there are very few screams on the album and instead they try to sing and come up with a melodic side instead, that gets along quite well with the whole rapcore vibe which they possess. The turntables are also used more than average bands, and not only with a typical scratch sound, but also with a few super discreet electronic elements which add a nice flavor to some of the songs.

Unfortunately though, the album as a whole can sound a bit repetitive making it lack any repeated listening value. The music also doesn't seem to be as tight as it could be when judging by the talent every musician in the band seems to have. The melodic vocals also lack a bit of direction, drifting out of tune more than they should, and even though the melody gives a nice touch to the music, it does not get along with the sound as well as it could. These flaws are sure to be corrected with time and practice though, and are nothing to necessarily make you, the reader, stay away from the album either.

Overall, the music that's shown on "Smoovy" is far from anything groundbreaking, yet it can still be really enjoyable to listen to. Phyllis is not trying to be the next big thing or trying to spread deep messages to people, instead they carry on with a fun vibe the entire time and whether it be through their music or through their lyrics, it is sure to be an upbeat listen for anyone now and then. It's nice to see bands like this pop up every now and then. Without a shadow of doubt, "Smoovy" is moving as hell, and, while not anything breathtaking, it gets a thumbs up from me just for the fact that the band is trying to sound different than the typical mediocrity we see in the genre now a days.
