Phunk Junkeez - Sex, Drugs And Rap'N'Roll

The Phunk Junkeez are back, building on the success of their last EP, they have returned this time with a brand new full length and overall the musicianship is more mature, although the lyrical content has still remained chockfull of a mix of rhymes that range from juvenile sex raps to a verbal assault on the stage of rap and rock. Always humorous, the band have seemingly abandoned their pairing of rap and alternative rock that they once dabbled with and are now firmly entrenched in the vein of an experimental hip hop crew with a few live instruments and a light hearted attitude not unlike fellow AZ act, Dislocated Styles or Brooklyn's 2 Skinnee J's.

Vocally the album flourishes with clever rhymes and commentary on the state of the genre they helped forge with verses like "I'll wrap metal around your neck" and "Can somebody please explain to me what the hell happened? I mean everybody and their mother, even Tommy Lee's rapping, we need to do some scrapping, some bitch slappin'". They also flaunt their mastery of skit based songs with the ever enjoyable track "The Quest", which details a war between aliens and the band fighting over the planets weed supply, not too mention also enlisting the vocal talents of various friends on some other standout tracks including a high profile guest appearance from Sen Dog of Cypress Hill/SX-10 fame. But through it all, this album finds the band at its sharpest, witty and intelligent, yet dumbed down with an almost early Beastie Boys mentality that never fails to generate a laugh. They also make no bones about throwing a few disses at the current kings of the scene and almost feel introspective about where the future will take them, while also commenting on where they are at now, something that wasn't really touched upon in previous efforts from the band. This is most likely by no means an easy feat after once being signed to a major label, they have now come full circle to forming their own indie label and yet its also a shame as this is easily the most solid album they've released to date. Touching upon everything from spacey beats to oriental loops, country tinged rock, metal and funk filled hip hop grooves, the music has never been as on point as it is here and as such this album provides an interesting and fun filled escape from the seriousness and doldrums of the current hip hop and even rap metal scenes in place today.

But although for the most part things are on track, there are definitely a few tracks included that don't really hit upon anything special, yet when the band are on to something, they truly do stand out from the pack, with beats and grooves that are as catchy as the infectious lyrical content. Overall though, this release won't be for everyone, as its lack of serious or deeply emotional content only elicits an urge to be listened to now and then when you want to kick back or just have fun. But it will however definitely keep longtime fans of the band happy and in the end, that's probably what the combination of rap'n'roll should be all about, taking it easy and having fun.
