Think quickly: what could be as refreshing as spotting a pool filled with cold and clean water in a desert? Nothing? Actually, yes, there's something. Optic's arrival in the scene can be just as pleasant as the situation aforementioned. This four piece from Richmond, VA compose songs that are quite intriguing and undoubtedly different from what is seen now a days. Even though their music is somewhat influenced by some of the acts that we all listen to, they manage to use these influences as a base and add their own condiments to come up with a delicious meal of music, stuffed with innovation, quality and characteristics all of its own.
Optic's sound could be compared perhaps with a mixture between Incubus back in the "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." era with the now well-known Linkin Park, and, even though that may give you the idea of the band's sound being somewhat rapcore, I can't say that is entirely correct. Sure, the vocals carry a discreet rap flow, and the music can be, occasionally, similar to a rapcore band; yet the band bets high with melody and subsequently win, since that kind of puts them apart from the other bands in the genre. Besides the melody factor, the band also carries a strong electronic side that, even though may not play a big part in their music, is definitely noticeable and gives a nice flavor to Optic's musical banquet. On an overall view, Optic's music mixes a considerable amount of melody with a few rapcore passages, blending it all with an electronic perspective that is made with enough talent and quality to easily catch people's attention.
Something that could be considered a flaw in the band's music is Seth's vocal parts. When considering that the music asks for vocals with a lot of intensity, for the most part, they lack of it, as well as of feeling and direction, causing to even sound a little boring on the first few spins. Besides that though, the album is pretty much on point. Optic sounds very well mixed with catchy hooks, nice melodies, aggressive rapcore passages, good lyrics and an interesting electronic direction that sets the band as one to look out for in the future.
There are definitely much more than four elements in Optic's music which highlights the talent it possesses. They pretty much know what they're doing, and they are conscious to the fact they came up with something different and innovative, which may perfectly fit with some people's taste. After all, if the band can please earth, fire, wind and water, why wouldn't they be able to please you?
