"It's All A Long Goodbye" represents On Broken Wings' second full-length effort for Eulogy and much like their last, it finds the band once again evolving and refining their primarily metalcore-based brand of auditory destruction. Predominantly heavier than the bands past releases, much of their melodies and emotional wails have taken the backseat this time around. In their place the band have seen fit to expound upon scathing breakdown-driven metal replete with explosions of grind and experimentalism.
With this being the case, blast beats meet face to face with hard-hitting double kick as shredding riffs and gargled screams belt out with tyrannical aggression. Extreme by most accounts, the band rarely let up and while their metalcore aspects and love of staccato-styled song structuring make up for most of their arsenal, there are some unexpected additions to be found here. Occasionally the band derail their chugging menace for short bursts of introspective harmonizing, complete with cleanly sung vocals and progressive instrumentation that are intriguing enough to make the listener wish they weren't so under-used.
Basically though, the bulk of the album delivers an experience akin to an enraged pit bull on a leash barking wildly mere inches away from the listeners face. While this does get the adrenaline flowing, it can only last so long before the it is realized that the band aren't about to throw any massive curveballs and a level of uneasy comfort is established. In turn, there's no denying On Broken Wings have become better musicians or that their material hasn't become increasingly heavier with each release. But sadly, as "It's All A Long Goodbye" hints at, they haven't spent as much time pushing themselves in the directions that could actually give them a defining identity and truly set them apart from the pack.
