Oddman - Hollow Eyes

Oddman serve up a hefty dose of ferocious metalcore on this release, bridging a gap between the sounds of groups like Earth Crisis, Will Haven and Helmet to create a pipe bomb of musical energy that will leave the listener picking shrapnel out of their body, long after the CD's over.

Using deep growls and screams with vocal chord shredding verses, band front man Scott sounds somewhat similar to Karl Buechner of Earth Crisis, but where Karl tends to now focus a bit more on melody, Scott instead keeps it raw and guttural, unleashing yell after abrasive yell in fine metalcore form. Guitar work, is about what'd you expect from a band in this genre and as such slightly detuned riffs that dance the line between punk and hardcore with a touch of new metal thrown in to add some color are what help form the skeleton of music. The riffs played also have a semi detached demeanor which shoves the spotlight unto the vocals and keeps the grinding waves of chunky distortion in the background for the most part. Bass lines fall in the ranks as well and help push the guitar riffs into the listeners chest, backing them up with heavy handed swats that come assisted by hard hitting percussive punishment which violently abuses each tom to create grooves large enough to be labeled an auditory aftershock.

With metalcore and hardcore styles being the bands main battle plan, the music is sharp and deadly, though it could use a small amount of polish and tightening up. But on the other hand, the plowing grooves which are assembled a tad bit loose, do help give the band a primal energy and almost predatory rage which they proudly exhibit on this release. Yet, despite the authentic anger, powerful aggression and bulldozer vocals, there's not much individuality thrown out for the listener to pick up on, which overall leaves something to be desired. There's no question that the band are solid musicians and have all the ingredients to make something amazing, though perhaps they just need to shift their attention and take in a few new sights, so they can see something more fully realized when the time for their next effort rolls around.
