Number One Son are part of a growing legion of British bands following in the wake of Lostprophets. The fact that they share the same indie label makes the relationship further more transparent but Number One Son are by no means here to make up the numbers. With punchy tunes and an underlying rhythmical quality they share the same energy as other emerging Brit bands Autonomy, Kilkus and yes, Lostprophets, all hungry for a piece of the American dominated scene.
First track "Contrasts" could have been named after Nic Witmore's commanding vocals as he delivers rappy outbursts, stylish harmony, and anger fuelled screams. For the most part choosing to sing in a similar fashion to that of Spineshank as he switches between styles so fluently, particularly evident in songs like "Becoming" yet the Chilli Pepper sounding verses of "Inside I Divide" are never too far away. There's certainly no doubt about his vocal ability which is as versatile as it is epic with an appreciation for subtlety.
The music has a familiar quality and although it is easily described as nu metal this tag does nothing to show that the band has a strong lyrical substance not usually found in such a superficial and cynical genre. For the most part the album is consistent although it begins to wane towards the end and never reaches the heights of earlier tracks "Hourglass" and the up tempo "Contrasts". Also a little more surprises up their sleeves would be nice but you cant blame the band for sticking rigidly to a recipe they have mastered. If this band were American they would be touted as the next big thing, as it happens, they are British and will need every lucky break going in an effort to get noticed.
