With "Take A Ride On My One-Wheeled Rickshaw" unintentionally serving as the swan song release for Mod Flanders Conspiracy, it's no surprise that the band continue on with their twisted journey into genre-blurring psychosis. Packed full of songs as eclectic and as absurd as their titles, this album sees melodic mashed up against brutish metalcore, complete with a little bit of everything in-between.
Rooted in extremes, the band seem to like tipping the scales on this release, with either savage metalcore screams or crooning harmonic metal being on the opposing sides. While there is the consistent middle ground of eccentric funk and jazzy breakdowns, the bulk of the material feels more introspective than anything else. Oddly enough, as loosely assembled as it can be, it almost sounds quite cohesive and therefore makes the quirky interludes and segues all the more curious. That's not to say the boys have went cleancut however. There are still ample amounts of obscure pop-culture self-indulgence, outlandish screams and disorienting instrumentation.
But unlike their previous works, this doesn't so much sound as though it was distilled directly from the legends of the genre like Mr. Bungle, Nuclear Rabbit and Tub Ring. Instead, the band have come into a vibe that is so tainted by its own aggressive metalcore aspect that it sounds more like prog-rock performed by cartoons than the goofy metal that would be expected. Sure, much like the albums name would suggest, the songs on hand here do mostly go around in vicious circles with the same highs and lows - but then again so does a rollercoaster.
